An enormous loss to his family, the cruising community, the web list, and those of us who sought his advice. He will most certainly be missed and thought of often.

Skipper Bob always took the time to answer us, even the dumb questions. See you on the Waterway

What a shock and loss!!!

This is very sad news. Capt. Sterling wrote, "Skipper Bob always took the time to answer us, even the dumb questions." I imagine that he will continue to scout ahead for us finding a safe anchorage and places that welcome dogs.

Sadly,

Fellow Cruisers, I just heard from Elaine (Skipper Bob's wife) and she said to pass along a bit of info for you all: Bob died at 8 in the morning, Monday. It was sudden and he died instantly. Apparently the last thing he did, just seconds earlier was send me a "thank you" email for my notes and updates for his book on the New York Canals, which I had sent him late sunday nite. I do that each year about this time. So we know he was in the middle of doing something he loved ... preparing for his next edition!Elaine has been involved in the Skipper Bob books since day one, and she has all the information and tools necessary to continue the Books and she intends to continue. Those of you who had sent in updates are encouraged to continue doing so. Bob relied in part on up-to-date reports from cruisers in distant areas, so that he could provide the most recent information ... a fact that always made his books so great to have. Elaine closes with "Your prayers are appreciated and in lieu of flowers he asked me a long time ago to have memorial contributions sent to your local Salvation Army." Bob will live in our memories and in his books and those will continue on. He is a Good Man.

For those of you not familiar with the Skipper Bob Books, they are a set of wonderful books detailing every dock, every town, every marina, every anchorage and even every electric plug along the Loop. I suggest that no cruise is complete without his books. Don't leave home without them! The Skipper Bob website is at http://skipperbob.home.att.net/ and the books are available on Amazon.com, and at many local marinas around the country. And lastly, I say that Elaine should be promoted to "Skipper Elaine", an honorable title. Best wishes to all on a sad day,

Fred W.

A TRIBUTE TO SKIPPER BOB
Robert (Bob) Reib and his wife, Elaine, better known to Long Range Cruisers, Great Loopers, Snow Birds and many Live Aboards as Skipper Bob and First Mate / Admiral Elaine will always be remembered andrevered by all who have purchased and relied on their excellent cruising guide books and advice. There are simply no words to describe Skipper Bob s contributions to the long range cruising community or how very much he will be missed. His books have been at our helm for many years and served us well on our Great Loop adventure. Then again this past September when we chartered an Erie Canal barge boat his New York Canal System book was right beside us. We met Bob and Elaine at a West Marine Trawlers Fest in the Solomons, MD many years ago when we were in the dreaming stages of doing the Great Loop. We learned that they lived in Rochester, PA near Judy s brother and visited their home to buy a book or two on several occasions, always learnomg much more than we paid for. We also enjoyed their presentations at several Americas Great Loop Cruisers Association Rendezvous. Bob always shuttered at our doing the Loop in a gasoline powered boat and used us as his example of spending too much on fuel - but always respected our need for the style of raised bridge cruiser we have due to Judy s several joint replacements. When it came to spending money on one s boat or cruising, one of his more famous quotes was: If you can afford it (whatever it is) then you positively need it. It is a gross understatement to say that the boating community has lost a great and wonderful FRIEND. Skipper Bob always made it a point of answering questions with great advice and often gave excerpts from his books, free of charge, with only a mention that the information was contained in one or more of his books. He could always be counted upon for his sage advice, time and time again. Many of us on various Email subscriber lists often waited for his posts before offering advice of our own - just to learn more from the master of long range cruising. Love and God bless Elaine and give her and the Reib family comfort in this time of great loss.

I am certain that Skipper Bob made the Great Loop possible for us. In person and through emails he gave us confidence and advice that convinced us to "just do it." Cruising the Great Loop improved our lives and gave us many memories we will never forget, including memories of Skipper Bob. We are thankful for what he did for us.
