ActiveCaptain Mobile runs on Windows and Palm smartphones. An iPhone version is in the works.
What is ActiveCaptain Mobile?
Jeff and Karen Siegel: ActiveCaptain Mobile combines marine navigation, thousands of full-size nautical charts, and an electronic guidebook on your mobile phone. It was designed to work in combination with the ActiveCaptain website allowing you to access more than 30,000 markers showing marinas, anchorages and local knowledge information and display them on NOAA charts.
ActiveCaptain Mobile is a handheld chartplotter providing a backup to your onboard system, a portable chartplotter for your dinghy and a planning tool away from your helm and onshore. With the addition of a GPS, ActiveCaptain Mobile will display your current position, navigate to a waypoint, or travel along a route. Because it is portable you can have it with you anytime, anywhere, for planning, navigating and dreaming.
When was ActiveCaptain first introduced? What has the acceptance level been?
Jeff and Karen Siegel: The ActiveCaptain web site came alive in January 2007. ActiveCaptain Mobile was released in March 2008. Acceptance has been good and growing steadily. Like most ventures of this sort, growth leads to more growth—word of mouth is always the strongest push. We have been very pleased.
We have 10,000 registered users, over 1,000 updates a day, tens of thousands of markers—but we want more. The power of ActiveCaptain is the fellow Captains who contribute. The more Captains contributing, the more information is there for other Captains who will then contribute. We want to see reviews for every marina. We want more fuel prices, marina services and local knowledge, and we're working hard to make this easy and useful for our users.
