What is ActiveCaptain? Jeff and Karen Siegel: ActiveCaptain is the next generation cruising guide. It is a wiki-style online database of marinas, anchorages, boat ramps, bridges, inlets, and other local knowledge presented visually on maps, satellite images and nautical charts. ActiveCaptain is the perfect companion to your chartplotter. Captains access information on the ActiveCaptain website or by using ActiveCaptain Mobile on their mobile phone. What sets ActiveCaptain apart from traditional guide books is its live format, contribution of information from users, and thousands of user reviews for marinas and anchorages. While printed guides are often out-of-date before the printing is complete, ActiveCaptain provides a means to continually update and modify its content. And the data entered is most often done by Captains who offer the type of information cruisers want. For example, it is fine to know that a marina has showers, but what one really wants to know is if they are clean! Captains tell us the most useful portion of ActiveCaptain is the reviews. Honest reviews by real cruisers help fellow cruisers determine when to pull in, when to pass by, and when to use an anchorage. ActiveCaptain Mobile compliments the website. ActiveCaptain Mobile software runs on mobile phones providing users with a handheld navigation tool supporting routes, waypoints, GPS location, etc. The website information can be downloaded and overlaid on nautical charts allowing users to carry it with them when ashore, on the dinghy, or wherever they go.
